Alabama Traumatic Brain Injury Foundation Training Module

Mental Health Issues After Traumatic Brain Injury

Training Summary:This presentation briefly describes mental health issues as the issues relate to individuals with traumatic brain injury, with an emphasis on depression, anxiety, and personality disorders.  A general overview introduces the audience to basic definitions, levels of severity, incidence rates, causes, risk factors, and effects of traumatic brain injury. Suggestions for coping with mental health issues and accommodations for individuals with traumatic brain injury and mental health issues are discussed.  Audience will receive state-wide and national resources for traumatic brain injury, as well as mental health issues.


Training Objectives:
Participants will be:

  • provided with an explanation of traumatic brain injury, as well as causes, effects, and prevalence.

  • familiarized with mental health issues connected with traumatic brain injury.

  • provided with suggestions for coping with an individual with traumatic brain injury and mental health issues. 

  • provided with ideas for accommodations that may be useful in an individual's return to work or school after a traumatic brain injury and onset of mental health issues.

  • provided with mental health resources that may be useful when serving an
    individual with traumatic brain injury and mental health issues.

  • given information on accessing the resources available in Alabama and nation-wide for working with persons surviving traumatic brain injury and their caregivers.
